at Pastoral Valley with celebrated Turkish photographer
Faruk Akbaş as your guide to taking memorable photographs. Pastoral Valley Ecological Farm is located West
of Ancient Lycia where is quite rich by visual
natural and historical values. Photagraphers find
interesting themes for their cameras as the
ecological life itself in Pastoral Valley,
archeological remainings in the ancient cities,
Taurus Mountains surrounding the valley and cultural
figures in the traditional villages.
WHO CAN TAKE PART?
Anyone with an interest in photography,
whether beginner or expert, will find subjects to
photograph from the ancient Lycian ruins to
traditional lifestyles, Turkey’s amazing flora and
fauna (particularly rich in this region), the sea
and the ever-changing landscape of bays and coves
along the coast.
At the same time if you want to get to know
Fethiye and the surrounding areas better, this
holiday will also meet your needs. Any spare
time can be spent on the beach, in the sea or taking
part in handicraft workshops. Those seeking peace
and quiet can lie in a hammock under the trees, sit
on a bench in the garden or relax on a shaded
platform by the river. For those interested we
even arrange for you to photograph sunrise while
standing in the sea.
GROUP SIZE
This programme needs a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 people to run.
PROGRAMME
Faruk Akbaş will be the guide for all photographic activities within the programme which starts on a Sunday when participants arrive in Fethiye, and finishes on the following Saturday.
DAY 1: Welcome meeting, full details of the week to be explained and discussed.
A short walk around the local area to start taking photographs. Discussion of depth, speed and movement in photography.
DAY 2: Walk along Saklikent Canyon with photographers considering depth and shade.
Visit to ruins of ancient Lycian city of Xanthos where exposure and composition will be discussed.
In the afternoon time on the beach at Patara, Turkey’s longest beach, then the opportunity to photograph sunset from the sand dunes.
DAY 3: A free day for the beach or to download photographs to the computer.
DAY 4: Walk from Kayakoy to Ölüdeniz looking at old Greek churches, chapels and ruins of stone houses. Then the opportunity for panoramic photography as the trail winds down to Ölüdeniz.
DAY 5: Training in the taking of wildlife and portrait photographs.
Use of natural and artificial light.
DAY 6: A boat trip which visits a light house, islands and deserted coves – all excellent subjects for photography.
DAY 7: Wide angle and panning techniques.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation at
Pastoral Valley is in ecologically-designed
buildings of stone, mud-brick and/or wood. Guests at
Pastoral Valley benefit from the traditionally
prepared Mediterranean dishes using all organic
ingrediets. The latter are mainly grown at Pastoral
Valley or sourced from other members of the local
organic growers cooperative. The natural flavoursof
fruit and vegetables are one of the main elements of
Pastoral Valley's eco lifestyle.

BEFORE THE HOLIDAY
Participants may wish to put together a small collection of their photographs for everyone to .look at and/or choose to bring photographs which illustrate their areas of weakness as a photographer.
EQUIPMENT
A simple camera will suffice but you may wish to bring all or some of the following:
Lenses (wide angle and telephoto)
Spare batteries/battery charger
Tripod
Laptop computer
You are welcome to bring whatever equipment you wish – and remember you must take responsibility for it during your stay.
CLOTHING
Comfortable walking shoes
Sandals
Clothes which are comfortable, light and you don’t mind them getting dirty
Swimsuit
A light jumper in case it gets cooler in the evenings.
CHANGES TO THE PROGRAMME
It may be necessary to make changes to the programme due to weather or light conditions, this will be up to the guide. It may also be necessary to delay meal-times in order to take advantage of particular light conditions and, in this case, the group gets to vote on whether to lose the light or eat on time.
YOUR GUIDE
Faruk Akbaş is celebrated for his photographs of Turkey and other Asian countries. For some time he taught at Hacettepe University in Anakara and currently teaches in the Fine Arts Faculty of Akdeniz University in Antalya. He founded the Photography House in Istanbul and the Kayakoy Art Camp and has worked widely for Fujifilm in Turkey. He has made films for the Turkish national television company TRT. He publishes regularly in magazines and has also produced the following books:
